Many employers come to campus to participate in specific diversity recruiting programs. You can connect with these employers through the following programs:

Diversity Professional Leadership Network

The Career Center developed the Diversity Professional Leadership Network to help students of color increase their knowledge of various careers and sharpen/enhance their soft skills. Through the program, students will learn more about being a professional and business etiquette, get an inside view of a specific industry/career path, and learn how to make a successful transition from school to the world of work.

Diversity Professional Leadership Network Program & Events

Exclusive Programming will be provided to the Diversity Professional Leadership Network members:

  • How to Network workshop conducted by the Career Center
  • Special Internship Program preparation – including but not limited to reviewing applications, personal statements/essays, and mock interviews
  • Networking event at Stony Brook Manhattan – A meet and greet event to get to know all of the professionals and utilize the networking skills learned through all of the workshops
  • Job Shadow Week “A day in the life of a professional”– an opportunity to shadow the professional volunteer for the day at their job site
  • Special Reception with African American and Latino Alumni Professionals

Special Access will be provided to members of the Diversity Professional Leadership Network to the following Career Center annual events:

  • Mock Interview Day: Practice makes perfect! This event is designed to give students the interview practice they need to be polished by the time they get to a “real life” employer. Four to six students are matched with an employer volunteer based on career interest. The employer conducts practice interviews with each student and provides feedback.
  • Etiquette Dinner (Free Admission): Learn how to wine and dine (non-alcoholic version, of course) with fellow students, faculty, staff, and employer partners. Discussions are lead about appropriate small talk at networking functions as you listen to the speaker, Ms. Manners, teach you which fork to use.

Special Seating will be provided at the following events:

  • Interviewing Skills workshop conducted by a corporate/employer partner
  • Leadership Skills workshop conducted by a corporate/employer partner
  • Secrets to Corporate Success workshop conducted by a corporate/employer partner
  • Career Success Stories: The African American Alumni Experience panel event. Learn how a panel of African American SBU Alumni used their experiences at Stony Brook, internships and networking connections to create great career opportunities.

Application Process

Recruiting for the Diversity Professional Leadership Network will take place every Fall semester. The program will run in the Spring semester. There will be an online application process.

Participation Agreement

Each participant will have to sign a student participation agreement that confirms their knowledge and understanding of the all rules and regulations associated with the program. It will also illustrate the students’ commitment to the program.

Diversity Panels/Information Sessions

The Career Center host panel events and Information Sessions for students to learn employers who wish to educate & recruit for their internship/full-time employment programs.

Employer Resume Clinics

Before our job/internship fairs, hundreds of students visit the Career Center to have their resumes critiqued. We solicit help from employers to ensure our students' resumes are in tip top shape. This is an excellent opportunity to get advise from a “real” employer from various industries and leave a lasting impression. Shifts are available Monday - Friday from 10am-12pm and 1pm -4pm.

Employer Prime Time Series

Space is available in the Career Center lobby for employers to distribute literature, educate students about job opportunities, and collect resumes on a drop-in basis. This is an excellent opportunity for students to drop in between classes to learn more about an organization/industry.
